Corneal Sensitivity and Contact Lenses.

چکیده

IT is a matter of experience that certain persons adjust well to contact lenses while others do not, despite perfect fitting. This adjustment is greatly facilitated if the sensitivity of the cornea is decreased, as it is after cataract extraction. One is therefore tempted to consider corneal sensitivity as a determining factor for the success of a fitting. Previous investigation of the subject has been mainly directed to examining the change in comeal sensitivity after wearing contact lenses (Cochet and Bonnet, 1960; BobergAns, 1955). In the past, prediction of contact lens tolerance seemed difficult as threshold measurements were not helpful. At that time no consideration was given to the factors of pressure, friction, and size of contact area. After investigation of these factors (Schirmer, 1963) and assessment of their effects upon corneal threshold and tolerance, it seemed interesting to apply these procedures on patients before their contact lens fitting. The results obtained were compared with the follow-up history of the individual patient.

Corneal and conjunctival sensory function: the impact on ocular surface sensitivity of change from low to high oxygen transmissibility contact lenses.

PURPOSE Deprivation of oxygen to the ocular surface during contact lens wear has been implicated in the alteration of sensory function. This study investigates whether increasing oxygen availability through discontinuation of contact lens wear or transfer into highly oxygen transmissible (high Dk/t) lenses leads to a change in corneal or conjunctival sensitivity. METHODS Twenty-seven long-ter...

Recovery of corneal sensation following hard contact lens wear and the implication for adaptation.

Recovery of corneal sensitivity was determined in hard contact lens wearers 2, 4, 6, 12, and 24 hr after removing the lenses. The extent of recovery was shown by the statistical similarity of the threshold values for the contact lens group and the thresholds of a group of subjects who had never worn contact lenses. Consideration of the time course of recovery and of the thermal modality of the ...

Therapeutic use of soft contact lenses.

Soft contact lenses are widely used for correction of refractive errors and in diseases related to corneal surface irregularities. In this case series we have used soft contact lenses in treatment of patients having bullous keratopathy, corneal ulcer, dry eye, trichiasis and corneal perforation. Soft contact lenses were found to be superior than conventional method of treatment and they have re...

Corneal ulcers in two children wearing paragon corneal refractive therapy lenses.

OBJECTIVES To report the development of corneal ulcers in two children wearing Paragon Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) lenses. METHODS Two case reports of children who developed corneal ulcers when fit with Paragon CRT contact lenses, which were worn nightly, are discussed. Each patient presented with a bacterial corneal ulcer after wearing CRT contact lenses for less than 6 months. In the f...
